The EBSOMED project has published on the 22nd of March 2022 a study to analyse the development of the green transition in the Mediterranean and the business opportunities offered by this decarbonisation process. Taking as reference instruments both the Green Deal and the Agenda for the Mediterranean, this paper tackles the potential of the renewable energy sector as a highly scalable industry that can bridge the apparent gap between economic growth and environmental sustainability, especially in a post-pandemic context.

This sector strategic paper is the first of its kind: it offers the possibility of finding, in a single document, a global Mediterranean outlook with key quantitative and qualitative data from Northern and Southern Mediterranean countries. The information it gathers will prove crucial for policy making and decision-making in the public and private sectors. 

The study has been developed by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Barcelona, as an affiliate member of the EBSOMED project, and co-produced with the Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME).

Innovation, economic viability, and regional cooperation

The paper presents the state of the art on green energies in both shores of the Mediterranean. It does so, however, with a regional vision, to better understand the implications of the sector on the governance and socio-economic structures of a diverse, yet similar, region. In this sense, only a global-regional coordinated plan of action that includes both policy and industry stakeholders will be effective to achieve the Euro-Mediterranean ambitious plans for sustainable development.

By accessing this paper, the public of both shores of the Mediterranean will get a first-hand insight into the ongoing actions in the region to achieve decarbonisation. After all, these actions affect them directly, as in addition to climate change mitigation, energy transition could turn the Mediterranean into a net energy exporter and foster job creation. This would especially affect the Mediterranean youth and women, due to their major green and social consciousness and digital skills.
